Los Portales de Comala

Los Portales de Comala is a traditional cantina on Portal Morelos in the Centro of Comala, Colima, Mexico, following the classic Comala custom of serving a free rotating botana comaltense with every round of drinks ordered. The kitchen also offers carnitas and tostadas de tuba, made with the local fermented palm-sap drink, but the defining feature is the complimentary botana tradition rather than an à la carte menu. The setting is under Comala's arcaded portales facing the town plaza, an open-air, colorful space with communal picnic-style tables, no dress code, and a relaxed, sociable atmosphere that builds through the afternoon and evening. There is no formal wine list; the drinks program is built around beer and tuba-based beverages consumed alongside the free botana rounds. Reservations are not required, since the cantina operates on a walk-in, order-a-round basis, and it draws its steadiest crowds in the late afternoon and early evening.
