Nevado de Colima Summit Trail via La Joya

The Nevado de Colima Summit Trail begins at the La Joya trailhead inside Nevado de Colima National Park, on the Colima-Jalisco border. Access is by private vehicle or an arranged guide transport from Ciudad Guzman in Jalisco or from Colima city; the final stretch of the approach road is unpaved and rutted, so a high-clearance vehicle is strongly recommended, especially after rain. No permit is required to enter the park at La Joya, though a small parking fee is sometimes collected at the ranger checkpoint. From the gate, the route climbs roughly 700 meters of cumulative elevation gain over a 12-kilometer round trip, reaching the extinct volcano's summit at approximately 4,260 meters above sea level. The lower half follows a wide dirt and volcanic-ash track through pine and alpine grassland, with the ranger hut and a small clearing serving as a natural rest point and turn-around option for hikers uncertain about continuing above the treeline. Above the treeline, the surface changes to loose volcanic scree and rock, with sustained exposure to wind and, in the coldest months, patches of ice near the crater rim. Trekking poles help considerably on the scree sections, and pacing slows noticeably above 3,800 meters due to the altitude. There is no reliable water source along the route, so hikers carry all water from the trailhead. There are no refuge huts on the mountain itself, though the ranger station at La Joya offers basic shelter before and after the hike. The summit affords views across the Colima-Jalisco highlands and, on clear days, toward the smoking crater of the neighboring Volcan de Fuego. Because of the altitude and exposed scree near the top, this is considered one of the more demanding day hikes in the state of Colima and is best attempted by hikers with prior high-altitude experience.
