Los Amiales Waterfall Trail

The Los Amiales Waterfall Trail is located inside Parque Ecologico Los Amiales in the Comala foothills, Colima, reached by taxi or private vehicle from Comala town center in about 15 minutes. The park charges a small entrance fee at the gate, which covers access to the trail and the swimming pools at the base of the falls; no separate hiking permit is needed. The route covers 4 kilometers round trip with about 150 meters of cumulative elevation gain and loss down to the waterfall pools. The path follows a well-used dirt and stone trail through subtropical forest, with wooden footbridges crossing the stream at several points. Shade is consistent for most of the walk thanks to the dense canopy, and the final descent to the falls involves a series of stone steps that can be slippery when wet. The main landmark is the waterfall itself, which splits into multiple cascades feeding a series of natural swimming pools; the upper viewing platform above the falls makes a reasonable turn-around point for visitors who prefer not to descend the steps to the pool level. There is no potable water source along the trail, so hikers carry their own. The park has basic facilities near the entrance, including restrooms and food vendors on weekends, but no shelter or refuge along the trail itself. Water flow at the falls varies significantly by season: July through September, during the rainy season, brings the fullest flow and largest pools, while November through April offers lower water volume but easier, drier footing on the stone steps. This is one of the more family-friendly hikes near Comala, combining a short forest walk with a swimming opportunity at the destination, though the stone steps near the falls require some care.
