Laguna de Cuyutlán Birdwatching

The Laguna de Cuyutlán is a large coastal lagoon system stretching between the towns of Cuyutlán and Manzanillo, one of the most significant wetland habitats on Mexico's central Pacific coast. Visitors come primarily for birdwatching, scanning the shallow, brackish water and mangrove edges for herons, egrets, roseate spoonbills, ibises, and large numbers of migratory shorebirds and waterfowl that pass through between October and March. Public roadside pullouts along the highway offer free views into the lagoon, while local guides run small boat tours into the mangrove channels for closer access to nesting and feeding areas. A typical outing lasts two to three hours, best done at dawn when bird activity peaks and the water is calm and reflective, producing the clearest photo conditions. The lagoon also supports traditional salt-evaporation ponds near Cuyutlán, adding cultural interest alongside the wildlife. Crowds are minimal outside the peak migratory season, when a handful of birding groups and photographers gather at the better-known viewing points along the highway.
