Scuba Diving and Snorkeling at Roca del Elefante

Roca del Elefante is a rocky reef and boulder formation off Playa La Audiencia near Las Hadas in Manzanillo Bay, popular for both introductory snorkeling and open-water scuba diving. The site's granite boulders and swim-throughs shelter tropical reef fish, moray eels, octopus and occasional rays, with depths ranging from a few meters at the surface to roughly 12-18 meters around the base of the rock, suiting both snorkelers and certified divers. Snorkeling requires no certification or prior experience and is suitable for most swimmers, including children with supervision. Scuba diving requires an open-water certification, or a supervised discover-scuba introductory dive for first-timers, and reasonable swimming ability; local dive shops run PADI or SSI-affiliated instruction and guided dives. Gear including mask, fins, snorkel or full scuba equipment, tanks and weights is provided by the outfitter, while divers typically bring their own logbook and certification card, and both divers and snorkelers should bring reef-safe sunscreen and a rash guard for sun and stinger protection. Manzanillo's dive operators generally brief guests on entry and exit procedures, buddy checks, hand signals and the boat's emergency oxygen and first-aid provisions before departure, with the short 10-15 minute boat ride back to Las Hadas marina keeping evacuation times low in the event of an emergency. Visibility and calm seas are best from May through November, before winter swells and wind chop reduce clarity from December through April. Divers should avoid the site during periods of strong onshore swell, when surge and reduced visibility make the boulder swim-throughs less safe.
