Casa de las Artesanías del Estado de Chihuahua is the state government's flagship craft outlet, occupying a colonial-era building in downtown Chihuahua City near Plaza de Armas. Unlike souvenir stalls aimed at passing tourists, the shop sources directly from registered Rarámuri (Tarahumara) weavers, Mata Ortiz potters from the Casas Grandes region, and Mennonite dairy producers from the Cuauhtémoc valley, so goods carry documented provenance rather than mass-produced imitations. The inventory spans double-weave sotol baskets, hand-coiled black and polychrome pottery, sotol and sotol-based liqueurs, pinole, leather goods, and textiles woven on backstrap looms. Because it is a state-run cooperative, prices are fixed and posted on tags -- bargaining is not customary here, unlike in open-air tianguis markets elsewhere in the city. Cash (pesos) is preferred, though major stands accept cards; no formal tax-refund program applies to these purchases. The store is quiet and air-conditioned, without food service on site, but several cafes and taquerias line Avenida Niños Héroes within a block. Visitors should head to the back room for the higher-end Mata Ortiz ceramics, which are displayed with the potter's name and village, distinguishing authentic pieces from lower-cost decorative copies sold near the entrance.
