Artesanías Misión (Creel)

Artesanías Misión sits along Avenida Lopez Mateos in Creel, the small Sierra Tarahumara town that serves as the main gateway to Copper Canyon. The shop is run out of a mission-linked cooperative that channels sales directly to Rarámuri families living in the surrounding barrancas, so the goods on offer -- coiled pine-needle and sotol baskets, hand-sewn traditional dress, wooden violins and drums, and both Rarámuri and Mata Ortiz-style pottery -- are made locally rather than trucked in from wholesale suppliers. Quality varies stall to stall inside the space: pieces with tighter, more even basket coils and hand-painted (rather than stenciled) pottery designs command higher prices and represent the more skilled artisans. Prices are mostly fixed but modest negotiation on multiple-item purchases is tolerated, more so than at formal state-run outlets. Cash in pesos is the norm; card acceptance is inconsistent this far into the sierra, so visitors should not rely on it. There is no food service inside the shop, but taco stands and comedores line the same street. The town itself is compact, so the shop is easily combined with a walk to the nearby train station and church plaza.
