Palenque Temples in Dawn Mist

The classic frame from the Gran Plaza faces east toward the Templo de las Inscripciones with El Palacio's four-storey tower rising behind, rainforest ridgeline as backdrop and drifting mist filling the middle ground on humid mornings. Arriving at the 08:00 opening gives the best chance of catching mist still pooled in the plaza before it burns off around 09:30; the temples are side-lit as the sun clears the tree line, raking across the stepped facades and picking out carved stucco on the Temple of the Cross group by mid-to-late afternoon around 15:30-16:00. November to February mornings are coolest and produce the thickest mist; June to October brings the heaviest cloud cover and rain, which flattens contrast and can wash out the shot entirely. The plaza fills quickly after the first tour buses arrive around 09:00, and tripod positions in front of the Inscripciones staircase get contested fast, so photographers wanting an unobstructed foreground should be in place at opening. Tripods, monopods and lighting rigs are classed as professional equipment under INAH rules and require advance written authorisation through the INAH-01-001 procedure; handheld cameras need no permit. Drones are prohibited outright anywhere on site. Two tickets are collected separately: a CONANP national park fee of about 47 MXN (approx USD 3) at the road gate, and an INAH admission of about 150 MXN (approx USD 9) at the CATVI visitor centre, for a combined 197 MXN (approx USD 12) per person, cash in pesos only. Sunday entry to the INAH portion is free for Mexican nationals and permanent residents with identification, which noticeably increases plaza crowds on that day.
