Comitán de Domínguez lies about 87 km southeast of San Cristóbal de las Casas, reached in roughly 1 hour 45 minutes by colectivo van or OCC coach, both running continuously from San Cristóbal's terminals. The town works either as a half-day round trip of 6-7 hours or as a natural overnight stop for travellers continuing on to El Chiflón and the Lagos de Montebello. Comitán's hilly colonial centre is built around the Parque Central, one of the liveliest plazas in the state, ringed by arcaded buildings, cafés and the Templo de Santo Domingo. A short walk from the plaza, the Casa Museo Dr. Belisario Domínguez preserves the home of the physician and senator for whom the town is named, with period rooms and exhibits on his political career. The town's compact layout means the plaza, museum, market and main restaurants all sit within easy walking distance of each other, so a comfortable half day covers the centre without needing local transport. Comitán has a strong regional food identity, and a lunch stop is worth building into the day at one of the restaurants near the plaza serving cochito horneado, tamales de bola or the town's own herbal liqueur, comiteco. The compact hilly streets involve some uphill walking between the plaza and outlying viewpoints, but nothing beyond an easy stroll. The town can be visited comfortably in any season, and its cooler highland climate makes it a pleasant midday stop even outside the dry months that suit the nearby waterfalls and lakes.
