Grutas de Rancho Nuevo and El Arcotete

These two stops sit close together just southeast of San Cristóbal de las Casas: Grutas de Rancho Nuevo about 12 km out and El Arcotete a further 5 km east, together making a light half day of 3-4 hours round trip. A colectivo toward Teopisca or a taxi from San Cristóbal reaches Rancho Nuevo directly, while El Arcotete is close enough to the historic centre for a taxi or even a rented bicycle. Grutas de Rancho Nuevo is a lit limestone cave system set in pine forest, with a short paved walkway leading past stalactite and stalagmite formations lit for easy viewing; horse-riding stands at the entrance offer short rides through the surrounding pine forest for those with extra time. El Arcotete centres on a natural limestone arch spanning the Amarillo River, with picnic areas, a small zipline course and a short forest trail along the riverbank, popular with local families especially on weekends. Both sites suit a relaxed pace with minimal walking, and a typical visit covers each in under an hour. There are simple food stalls at both entrances selling grilled corn, quesadillas and soft drinks, enough for a light lunch between the two stops. The cave floods less and the trails stay driest during the dry season from November to April, though both sites remain open and enjoyable year-round. Because the stops are so close to San Cristóbal, they work well as a half-day filler alongside a morning market visit or an afternoon in the historic centre rather than as a full day on their own.
