Jungle Trek to Bonampak and Yaxchilan

The trek to Bonampak and Yaxchilan combines a community-vehicle jungle transfer to the Bonampak murals with a lancha ride down the Usumacinta river to the Yaxchilan acropolis, covering a full day of walking, riding, and boat travel through the Lacandon jungle. The route calls for reasonable fitness for a full day on foot and in open vehicles, with some walking over uneven jungle ground between the murals and the archaeological sites, but no technical climbing or specialised skill is required; children able to manage a long day outdoors are generally welcome, though the heat and duration make it a demanding day for very young children. Lacandon community guides based in Lacanja Chansayab and Frontera Corozal lead every group, since the route crosses Lacandon-managed community land where an independent visit is not permitted; life jackets are provided for the river crossing, and participants are expected to bring their own sturdy hiking shoes, insect repellent, and rain protection. Guides brief the group at the start on the day's plan, river safety for the Usumacinta crossing, and what happens if someone cannot continue partway, which usually means waiting at the nearest community post for the vehicle to return. The route is accessible year-round; river levels on the Usumacinta run higher in the rainy season, which speeds up the boat ride but also raises the current, while the dry season from November to April gives calmer river conditions and firmer trails. Howler monkeys and toucans are commonly seen along both the jungle trail and the riverbanks.
