Canyoneering and Kayaking the Rio Lacanja

Paddling the Rio Lacanja is a gentle jungle kayaking outing near the Lacandon community of Lacanja Chansayab, run by kayak or inflatable canoe past a chain of waterfalls, including Las Golondrinas, with swimming stops in turquoise pools along the way. No prior paddling experience is needed and the pace is set for families with older children, though very young children are not accepted on the open kayaks; a reasonable level of swimming ability is expected since sections involve floating through pools. Kayaks or canoes, paddles, and life jackets are provided by Lacandon community guides who lead every trip, and footwear that can get wet is recommended since the route includes short walks between pools. Guides give a brief safety talk on entering and exiting the kayaks around the waterfalls and on staying within sight of the group, since parts of the river run through dense, roadless jungle with no vehicle access; in an emergency, guides evacuate participants on foot or by community vehicle back to Lacanja Chansayab. The river runs year-round but is most comfortable and clearest from November to April; heavier rain from June to October raises the water level and clouds the pools, which can make the swimming stops less appealing though the paddling itself remains manageable. The outing is commonly paired with a visit to the nearby Bonampak Maya murals, making it a popular half-day add-on for travellers already staying in the Lacandon jungle community.
