Mercado Alonso Felipe de Andrade

Mercado Alonso Felipe de Andrade is the principal municipal market of Ciudad del Carmen, on Isla del Carmen in southern Campeche state, and functions as a working food and produce market rather than a curated craft destination. Its stalls are supplied largely by the Laguna de Términos fishing fleet, with shrimp, oysters and lagoon fish sold fresh each morning, alongside tropical produce brought in from the Palizada river country and a scattering of woven palm goods and regional recado pastes. Vendors deal almost exclusively in cash, and prices on seafood and produce are set daily rather than negotiated, while a modest amount of bargaining is tolerated on non-perishable goods. The market's fondas, clustered near the main entrance, are a local institution for breakfast, serving pan de cazón and pejelagarto dishes distinctive to the Carmen area. The market is busiest and most complete in the early morning, with the seafood stalls thinning noticeably by midday as the day's catch sells out; there is no dedicated tourist section, so visitors should expect a market built for residents.
