Chicanna Archaeological Zone

Chicanna takes its name, House of the Serpent Mouth, from Structure II, where the central doorway is framed by the gaping jaws of the earth monster in one of the best-preserved Chenes facades anywhere in the Maya world; carved fangs curl around the door frame and stone eyes stare out above it, an effect designed to make entering the building feel like passing into the underworld. The compact site pairs this Chenes zoomorphism with the towered Rio Bec style seen at Becan and Xpuhil, making it the single clearest place to study both regional traditions within a short walk. Four small building groups are connected by shaded paths under high canopy, keeping the whole site cool even at midday, and the modest scale means the entire circuit can be covered on foot in under an hour without feeling rushed. Direct sunlight reaches into the monster-mouth doorway of Structure II around mid-morning, the best window for both viewing the carving in full relief and for photography, before the sun moves overhead and the deep-set doorway falls into shadow again. Visitor numbers are light even by Rio Bec standards, and it is common to have individual building groups entirely alone.
