Puertecitos tidal hot springs

Puertecitos tidal hot springs are three volcanic rock pools on a point at the small fishing settlement of Puertecitos, south of San Felipe on the Sea of Cortez coast of Baja California. The springs are entirely natural: scalding mineral water rises from the rock year-round, and it is only bathable when the incoming tide floods in and cools it to a comfortable temperature, giving roughly a two-hour bathing window on either side of high tide. There is no spa building, therapist or treatment menu here; the experience is unmediated soaking in mineral-rich water against the backdrop of the Sea of Cortez, often followed by a swim in the open sea once the tide is high enough. Facilities are minimal: a gated access point where a small fee is collected, and the pools themselves, with no changing rooms, showers or shade structures at the site. Because the bathing window depends entirely on the tide, visitors should check tide tables before the drive south from San Felipe and time their arrival for an hour or so before high tide; arriving at the wrong point in the cycle means either scalding water in the upper pools or a submerged, too-cool pool once the tide is fully in. Payment is made in cash at the gate and there is no reservation system. Puertecitos itself is a small boating community with a handful of restaurants, so many visitors combine the tidal pools with a meal in the village before or after the soak. The site draws both Baja road-trippers and local San Felipe residents, and it is at its best around sunset, when the light over the Sea of Cortez and the cooling desert air make the timed soak worth planning a day around.
