Baja California is Mexico's northwesternmost state, a 1,300 km-long borderland running from the busiest land border crossing on earth at Tijuana down the Pacific coast to the cactus deserts of the Valle de los Cirios. It packs a world-class wine valley, Baja Med cuisine, Pacific surf beaches, a 3,000 m granite sierra and the warm Sea of Cortez into a single drive-friendly state.
Baja California holds two very different climates within a few hours' drive. The Pacific side, from Tijuana through Rosarito and Ensenada to the wine valley, is Mediterranean and cooled year-round by the cold California Current: dry, warm summers around 26-30°C (79-86°F), mild winters near 20°C (68°F), and almost all the year's 250 mm of rain falling between December and March. Coastal cloud pushes inland most mornings in late spring, the local 'mayo gris' and 'junio sombrio', clearing by early afternoon. East of the sierra the state is Sonoran desert: Mexicali and San Felipe pass 43°C (110°F) through the summer and can top 48°C (118°F), while winter days are a comfortable 21-24°C (70-75°F). High in the Sierra de San Pedro Martir, above 2,500 m, snow lies from December to March and summer nights fall below 5°C (41°F).

Notes: September and October give the best combination of warm sea, harvest activity and clear skies. Winter is best for the desert and for whale watching, but brings the coast's rain.

Spring
Months: March-May
Hills turn green, wildflowers bloom in the desert and the wine valley is at its most photogenic. Coastal mornings are often overcast from mid-May, and the water is still cold at 15-17°C (59-63°F).
Summer
Months: June-August
Warm and dry on the coast at 26-30°C (79-86°F) with reliable afternoon sun, but extreme inland; Mexicali and San Felipe are dangerous for outdoor activity. Coastal crowds peak with the California school holidays.
Fall
Months: September-November
The best all-round season. Ocean temperatures peak near 21°C (70°F) in September, the wine harvest runs through September and October, desert heat eases, and skies are clear.
Winter
Months: December-February
Mild and green on the coast at 18-20°C (64-68°F), with the year's rain arriving in short Pacific fronts. Grey whales pass offshore from late December. The sierra can be snowbound and the observatory road may close.

- High Season
- July and August on the Pacific coast, US long weekends year-round in Rosarito and Ensenada, and the last two weeks of August for the wine harvest festival.
- Shoulder Season
- April to June and September to October, when weekends are busy but midweek is quiet and rates drop 30-50 percent.
- Low Season
- November to March, except around Christmas and New Year. The valley is at its quietest and several restaurants close for part of January.
