Bar Bura at Cuatro Cuatros

Bar Bura is the clifftop bar of Cuatro Cuatros, a large ranch and vineyard estate at Kilometre 89 of the Tijuana-Ensenada coast highway in Baja California, and it is the most photographed drink in the state. The bar itself is a set of timber decks and platforms built out along the lip of a ridge several hundred metres above the Pacific, with steps and walkways running between levels and no barrier between the seating and a very long view north and south along the coast. Vehicles are not permitted up the track: guests park at the ranch gate, pay an entry fee, and are carried up in open-sided shuttle trucks over a rough dirt road, a journey of several minutes that is part of the experience and the reason the site retains its isolation. The drinks list is built around the estate's own wines, made on the ranch and poured by the glass and in flights, alongside cocktails, mezcal and Mexican beer, and the kitchen sends out grilled plates rather than a full menu: oysters over coals, sharing boards of valley cheese and charcuterie, tostadas, and simple grilled meat and fish designed to be eaten with a glass in the other hand. Prices sit in the region of 150 to 250 pesos a glass and 250 to 500 pesos for a plate, on top of the entry charge. Sunset is the point of the place, and the decks fill for the hour before it; the crowd is young, largely Mexican, and the mood is celebratory, with music and a good deal of photography. Wind off the Pacific is constant and the temperature drops fast once the sun goes, so warm layers are essential even in summer. Service runs Thursday to Sunday from midday to 9PM. Reservations are strongly advised for sunset slots at weekends, and shuttles queue at busy times.
