Rancho La Puerta

Rancho La Puerta lies at Kilometre 5 of the Tecate-Tijuana federal highway, just outside Tecate in the inland hills of Baja California, Mexico, roughly 45 minutes east of Tijuana and about an hour and a quarter from San Diego, from which the ranch runs its own guest transfers. Founded in 1940 by Edmond and Deborah Szekely, it is the oldest destination spa in North America and the model on which much of the modern wellness-resort industry was built. The estate covers around 1,200 hectares of gardens, orchards, oak groves and hillside below Mount Kuchumaa, a peak held sacred by the Kumeyaay people, and the sense of enclosure and quiet across that acreage is central to the experience. The format is unusual: stays are structured as all-inclusive programmes, traditionally running Saturday to Saturday, covering accommodation, all meals, fitness classes, guided hikes and use of the facilities, with spa treatments charged separately. Accommodation is in casitas and villas scattered through the gardens rather than a single building, from Ranchera rooms through Hacienda villas to Villa Studios, all built in adobe, tile and local stone, furnished with Mexican folk art and deliberately without televisions. Days begin with sunrise hikes on the estate's trail network toward Mount Kuchumaa, followed by a schedule of classes across several gymnasiums and studios - yoga, Pilates, strength work, dance, meditation - alongside pools, tennis courts and a large spa complex offering massage, hydrotherapy and body treatments. Food is largely plant-based and mostly grown at the six-acre organic farm, Tres Estrellas, which also houses La Cocina Que Canta, a cooking school where guests take hands-on classes. Evening programming features visiting speakers, musicians and writers. Service is attentive and long-tenured, with many staff from Tecate having worked at the ranch for decades. Rates start from roughly MXN 9,500 per night as part of an all-inclusive week, and the ranch suits solo travellers as much as couples.
