Tecate Pueblo Magico

Tecate lies 50 km east of Tijuana on Highway 2, a 50-minute drive, with hourly ABC buses also running from Tijuana's Central de Autobuses for about MXN 180; the bus station is a five-minute walk from the town's central plaza. As the state's only Pueblo Magico, Tecate is a quiet border town built around the shaded Parque Miguel Hidalgo, known for its bakeries, its namesake brewery and the sacred Kumiai mountain Cerro Cuchuma rising behind the town. A weekend morning suits the town best: the plaza fills with locals, bakeries such as El Mejor Pan de Tecate turn out their busiest batches, and the pace stays unhurried compared with the more touristed coastal towns. A typical visit spends the late morning around the plaza and its surrounding streets, breaks for fresh bread from one of the town's bakeries around midday when the second bake comes out, and can extend into the afternoon by combining the stop with a drive south on Highway 3 into the Valle de Guadalupe wine country, forming a loop back to Ensenada. Tecate is a year-round destination, with the most comfortable weather from October through May, before the summer heat sets in. The town's border crossing back into California closes at 11PM, which matters for anyone combining Tecate with a longer loop and planning to cross north the same day. Food centres on the bakeries and a handful of simple taquerias around the plaza, alongside the brewery's beer garden for a mid-afternoon stop.
