San Felipe and the Sea of Cortez

San Felipe sits 195 km south of Mexicali, a 2.5-hour drive down Highway 5 across open desert, with ABC running daily buses for about MXN 400 and private transfers available from Mexicali airport; the road is paved and fast but passes through a military checkpoint near the halfway point. The town is a Gulf fishing settlement on the Sea of Cortez, known for warm, calm swimming water, a seafront malecon lined with shrimp-taco palapas, and the cardon cactus forest of Valle de los Gigantes about 20 minutes to the south. A typical visit times arrival around high tide for swimming, spends the late morning on the malecon and beach, breaks for a shrimp taco lunch at one of the seafront palapas in the early afternoon, and can add a detour to the Valle de los Gigantes cactus forest before the drive back to Mexicali. The best season runs October through May; summer heat regularly exceeds 45°C (113°F), making the desert crossing and beach both uncomfortable outside the cooler months. San Felipe has an unusually extreme tidal range, so the sea can retreat hundreds of metres at low water, and swimming and boating plans should work around the tide table rather than the clock. Given the distance, the round trip from Mexicali makes for a long day, and an overnight stay is often the more comfortable option; fuel should be topped up in Mexicali, since stations along Highway 5 are sparse.
