Playa Cantamar and the dunes

Playa Cantamar and its dunes lie south of Puerto Nuevo on the free road between Rosarito and Ensenada, a run of tall, pale sand dunes that back onto a broad open beach on the Pacific. The dunes themselves are the main attraction rather than the water: steep faces of fine sand rise well above the beach and are used for sandboarding and quad-bike or dune-buggy riding, with informal rental operators setting up along the roadside on weekends. The beach below the dunes is wide and largely undeveloped, with cold, often rough surf that is better suited to walking and photography than swimming. Outside weekends the area is close to empty, giving long uninterrupted stretches of sand and dune for walking or shooting photographs, while Saturdays and Sundays bring a steady stream of quad and buggy traffic and the noise that comes with it. Amenities are minimal: a scatter of roadside food stands sells tacos and drinks near the main access point, and parking is informal, mostly cars pulled onto the shoulder above the dunes rather than a marked lot. There are no toilets, showers or lifeguards, so visitors should plan to be self-sufficient for a half-day visit. The site is reached by exiting the free (non-toll) coastal road at Cantamar, about 50 minutes south of Tijuana, and parking on the shoulder near the dune faces; there is no public transit directly to the site, so a car or organized tour is the practical way to visit. The dry season from April to October gives the firmest sand for sandboarding and the least wind-driven dust, while winter rain can soften the dune faces.
