L.A. Cetto Valle de Guadalupe

L.A. Cetto in El Porvenir, Valle de Guadalupe, Baja California, Mexico, is the largest winery in Mexico by production volume, founded in 1928 by an Italian immigrant family whose descendants still run the business. The estate's Mediterranean-climate hillsides suit Nebbiolo particularly well, an Italian variety the winery has grown successfully since its founding and continues to be known for alongside its broader portfolio of reds and whites. The tasting patio is built in the round, echoing the shape of a bullring, and overlooks part of the estate's vineyards; a small on-site museum area displays historic winemaking equipment and photographs from the winery's early decades.

Because of its scale, L.A. Cetto's entry-level tastings are priced well below the valley's boutique wineries, which makes it a popular starting point for visitors new to the region or working with a tighter budget, without sacrificing access to a wide range of the estate's wines. Tastings typically move through four wines for a set fee, with options to add reserve or single-vineyard pours. The winery does not require advance booking for standard tastings, unlike many of the valley's smaller, appointment-only producers.

Weekday mornings are noticeably calmer than weekends, when the winery's accessible pricing and easy reach from the highway draw large groups from San Diego on organised valley tours. A visit -- tasting plus a look at the historic equipment -- takes about an hour. The property is signposted directly off Highway 3 at Kilometre 73.5, thirty minutes from Ensenada, with straightforward paved access and ample parking, unlike some of the valley's dirt-road wineries.
