Surfing the Pacific point breaks

Surfing in Baja California spans the full spectrum of ability, from gentle white-water beach breaks at Rosarito to the long cobblestone right-hander at San Miguel near Ensenada and, for experienced surfers only, the heavy big-wave reef known as Killers on the island offshore. Beginners need no prior experience and can stand up within a two-hour lesson at Rosarito; intermediate surfers should be comfortable duck-diving and reading rip currents at San Miguel; Killers is strictly for experienced big-wave surfers with reef experience, and there is no minimum age enforced beyond a guardian's judgment for younger surfers. Lesson packages include a soft-top board, a 3/2 or 4/3 wetsuit for the cold Pacific water, and a leash; surfers renting boards independently must bring their own wax, booties for rocky entries and a spare leash, since surf shops are limited outside Ensenada and Rosarito. Surf schools in Rosarito and Ensenada are long-established and generally reputable, though few hold formal international lifeguard certification, so surfers should ask about instructor experience before booking. A basic safety briefing covers rip currents, sea urchins on the rocky points and the location of the nearest lifeguard tower; boat trips to Killers carry no onboard rescue swimmer, so this session is for self-sufficient surfers only. The most consistent and biggest swells arrive between October and March on north and west swells, while summer offers smaller, more forgiving waves suited to beginners; surfers should avoid sessions during red-tide warnings or after heavy rain, when river mouths flush pollution into the surf zone.
