Plaza Bonita Mall Cabo San Lucas

Plaza Bonita sits on Boulevard Marina at the head of the Cabo San Lucas marina in Baja California Sur, an open-air, low-rise centre wrapped around courtyards and walkways that open directly onto the waterfront. It is the older and more casual of the two marina malls, and its tenant mix leans heavily toward visitor traffic arriving from the cruise tender pier and the surrounding hotels. Rather than department-store anchors, the centre is built from small independent units: silver and gemstone jewellers, resort clothing and swimwear shops, souvenir and T-shirt stores, cigar and tequila outlets, pharmacies, a supermarket for self-catering guests, and a handful of chain and local restaurants and bars facing the boats.

The balance between authentic Mexican craft and tourist merchandise tilts toward the latter, and the quality gap between neighbouring shops can be wide. Genuine goods are present — sterling silver from Taxco, Talavera ceramics, hand-woven textiles, regional hot sauces and vanilla — but they sit beside machine-made imports presented in the same way. Sterling should carry a .925 stamp, hand-embroidery shows uneven stitching on the reverse, and hand-painted ceramics vary piece to piece rather than repeating a printed pattern exactly. Comparable items in La Paz or in the towns inland typically cost less than they do on this stretch of the marina.

Bargaining is normal in the souvenir and jewellery units, where opening prices are often set two to three times above the accepted figure, and vendors sometimes call out to passing shoppers. It is not appropriate in the restaurants, pharmacy or supermarket, where prices are fixed. Cash in pesos secures the best terms; dollars circulate freely at poor conversion rates, and cards are accepted in most fixed-price shops. Mexico operates no general tourist VAT-refund scheme at this kind of retail, so IVA is simply part of the price.

The centre is open daily from roughly 9am to 10pm and is at its most crowded when cruise passengers come ashore in the late morning and early afternoon; those hours also bring the most aggressive sales approaches. Early morning and evening are calmer, and the waterfront restaurants and bars along the marina edge keep the place busy after the shops thin out.
