Uxmal

Uxmal is a spectacular Mayan archaeological site in the Puuc Hills of the Yucatan Peninsula, approximately 80 kilometers south of the state capital Merida. Occupied from approximately 700 to 1000 AD, Uxmal reached its peak as the dominant center of the Puuc region, a style of Mayan architecture characterized by smooth lower facades, intricately detailed mosaic upper sections, geometric stone latticework patterns, and distinctive rounded corners — all prominently displayed throughout the site. The Pyramid of the Magician is the first structure visible on entering, rising 38 meters with an unusual elliptical base unlike any other pyramid in Mexico. Five successive pyramids were built one atop another here over centuries, the oldest dating to the early Classic period. The Governor's Palace is widely considered the finest example of pre-Columbian architecture in all of Mexico — a long, low building with an upper facade composed of over 20,000 individually cut and placed stone pieces assembled in geometric mosaics of serpents and lattice, positioned on a raised terrace surveying the Puuc Hills. The Nunnery Quadrangle consists of four connected platforms enclosing a central courtyard, with differing decorative themes on each building representing the four directions. The Ball Court, though smaller than Chichen Itza's, retains original stone rings. An evening light and sound show illuminates the Pyramid of the Magician and surrounding structures after dark with narration about Mayan cosmology. Uxmal sees significantly fewer visitors than Chichen Itza despite being considered by many archaeologists the more architecturally accomplished site.
