Jardín de San Marcos

The Jardín de San Marcos is a walled nineteenth-century garden in the Barrio de San Marcos, about a 10 to 15 minute walk west of Plaza de la Patria in Aguascalientes City. A low balustrade of pink cantera stone with ornamental urns encloses the block, and inside, gravel paths radiate from a wrought-iron kiosk beneath mature ash and jacaranda trees. Along the north and east edges run the portales, arcaded galleries lined with cafes, cantinas and ice-cream stands where residents sit through the late afternoon. The garden gives its name to the Feria Nacional de San Marcos, the largest annual fair in Mexico, which has been tied to this spot since 1828 and each April and May fills the surrounding streets with concerts, bullfights, food stalls and parades. During those weeks the quiet plaza becomes the busy center of a fair that draws millions of visitors to the state of Aguascalientes; hotel rates across the city rise sharply and the garden itself stays crowded well past midnight. Outside fair season the garden reverts to a neighborhood square where a walk-through takes 30 to 45 minutes, longer for those who stop for a coffee under the arcades. The strongest photographs come from the west balustrade looking back across the kiosk toward the Templo de San Marcos, especially in the hour before sunset when the pink stone warms. Evenings bring the most local life, with families circling the paths and musicians occasionally playing near the kiosk. Mornings are near-empty and best for anyone who wants unobstructed images of the balustrade and the trees. The garden is free and always open, and it links naturally to the Templo de San Marcos on its edge and the Barrio de Triana just beyond. Because there is no ticketing or enclosure, the garden works equally well as a five-minute pause or an unhurried hour, and it is one of the few central sights in Aguascalientes that rewards a second visit at a different time of day.
