Isla San Marcos

Isla San Marcos stretches over more than 44 hectares along Boulevard San Marcos in the Pirules district, northwest of the historic center of Aguascalientes City, and ranks as the largest public green space in the state capital. Rather than a single park, it reads as a chain of linked areas: paved jogging and cycling circuits, football and basketball courts, skate ramps, playgrounds, open lawns and an artificial lake with a walking loop. Families spread out on the grass on weekend afternoons, and running clubs use the perimeter circuit at dawn and dusk. The park adjoins the Feria Nacional de San Marcos fairground complex, and during the April and May fair it absorbs overflow parking, concerts and temporary attractions, which transforms the atmosphere entirely for those weeks. Outside fair season visitors typically spend one to two hours here — enough to complete a lap of the main circuit, sit by the lake and let children use the play areas. Because the terrain is flat and open, with limited mature shade in parts, the middle of the day gets hot in the dry months from March through June; early morning and the hour before sunset are far more comfortable and also when the park is at its most animated with joggers, cyclists and food carts. The lake edge and the open lawns facing the boulevard give the widest photographs, and the eastern paths catch good evening light. Weekday mornings are the quietest, while Sunday afternoons draw the largest local crowds. Entry is free and gates are generally open from around 6:00AM to 9:00PM daily. It is a practical counterpoint to the churches and museums of the historic center, especially for travelers in Aguascalientes with children. Food carts and small kiosks operate near the main entrances at weekends, selling snacks, fruit and drinks at everyday local prices, though there are few facilities in the park's outer sections.
