The Three Cities of Birgu (Vittoriosa), Senglea (L-Isla) and Cospicua (Bormla) lie about 2 km across the Grand Harbour from Valletta in south-eastern Malta. They were the Knights of St John's first base on the island before Valletta was built, and their fortifications and narrow streets reflect that earlier history.

The three fortified towns across the Grand Harbour, home to the Knights' original base at Birgu.

The most pleasant way to reach them is by water: the harbour ferry leaves from Lascaris Wharf, which is reached from the Upper Barrakka Gardens by the Barrakka Lift, and crosses to Cospicua in roughly 15 minutes. Single fares are about EUR 1.50-3 and returns about EUR 2.80-5 depending on the source, and ferries run about every 30 minutes. Traditional dgħajsa water taxis cost about EUR 2-5 and run on demand, giving a short, scenic crossing. From Cospicua the walk to Birgu takes a few minutes. Birgu is the main focus for visitors, with its waterfront marina, the Malta Maritime Museum, the area around Fort St Angelo, and a grid of quiet lanes with old auberges and churches. Senglea, a narrow peninsula, is known for the Gardjola Gardens at its tip, where a watchtower overlooks the harbour and offers one of the best views back towards the Valletta skyline. A suggested one-day arc is to cross mid-morning, walk Birgu's lanes and waterfront, have lunch at one of the waterfront restaurants, continue on foot or by short hop to Senglea in the afternoon, and return by ferry around sunset when Valletta's honey-coloured walls glow. The area can be visited year-round; summer is hot and shade is limited on the bastions, so spring, autumn and winter are more comfortable for walking. Food stops include waterfront restaurants and cafes in Birgu and small bars in Senglea. A typical day costs about EUR 15-40 per person including transport and lunch, before any museum or fort entry fees.
