Borneo Nature Lodge

Borneo Nature Lodge sits on the banks of the Kinabatangan River in Bilit, a small riverside settlement in Sandakan district reached by road and boat from Sandakan town, roughly two to two and a half hours from the airport. The lodge is arranged as a group of wooden chalets and longhouse-style blocks raised above the riverbank on stilts, blending into the surrounding secondary forest and giving it a relaxed, eco-lodge character rather than a formal resort feel, with the river itself serving as the property's main focal point. Rooms are simply furnished timber chalets with private bathrooms, mosquito netting, and either air conditioning or fans, plus small balconies or shared verandas overlooking the river or forest; the emphasis throughout is on function and proximity to nature rather than luxury finishes. The on-site restaurant serves set Malaysian meals timed around the lodge's twice-daily river cruise schedule, with an open dining hall that becomes a social hub for guests swapping notes on proboscis monkey, orangutan, and hornbill sightings from the day's cruises. There is no spa, pool, or fitness centre, as the lodge's activities centre entirely on guided river cruises and short jungle walks led by resident naturalist guides. Service has a strong wildlife-guiding character, with knowledgeable boat drivers and guides forming the core of the experience, making the lodge well suited to nature photographers, birdwatchers, and families comfortable with a rustic, activity-focused riverside stay.
