A wide white sand beach on the Gulf of Riga with sunsets over the sea, reached from the Jomas iela pedestrian street.
Majori is the main resort district of Jūrmala, a seaside city about 25 km west of Riga, Latvia, on the Gulf of Riga. The beach at the end of the Jomas iela pedestrian street is a wide strip of fine white sand backed by dunes and pines. Jūrmala is known for its long beaches and wooden resort architecture, and Majori is the most developed part, with cafes, a pier area and the station a short walk from the sand.
The beach faces north-west across the Gulf of Riga, so summer sunsets fall over the sea. The usual frame is a wide shot of the sun dropping toward the horizon with the wet sand reflecting the sky, the line of the shore leading into the frame and silhouetted walkers or pine trunks as foreground. A 16-35mm wide-angle lens captures the whole sky, and a 70-200mm lens isolates the sun and the horizon. Long exposures after sunset smooth the water and blend the sky colours.
The best season is May to September, when the sun sets over the water at a reasonable hour; in midsummer sunset is late, around 22:00. Clear and partly cloudy evenings give the best colour; thick low cloud on the horizon blocks the sun. Autumn and winter storms give dramatic skies and ice formations on the shore, but the beach is cold and exposed. A graduated neutral density filter balances the bright sky against the sand, and a tripod is needed for long exposures.
The beach is crowded on summer weekends and warm evenings, but its width leaves plenty of room for a tripod away from the main access path. Walking a few hundred metres along the shore gives quieter frames. Access is free, though the town charges a resort fee for vehicles entering Jūrmala, which is relevant for drivers; trains from Riga to Majori station take about 30 minutes. Drone flying is subject to Latvian aviation rules, so operators should check restrictions. Restrooms and cafes are available near the Jomas iela end of the beach.
