Majori Beach is the central and most visited stretch of the Jurmala seaside in Latvia, reached from the pedestrian Jomas iela in the Majori district. The shore faces the Gulf of Riga, an arm of the Baltic Sea, and is made of fine pale sand that squeaks underfoot and is pleasantly soft for walking barefoot.

The sand band is very wide, often more than 50 metres between the dune line and the water, so even on busy summer days there is room to spread out. The water is shallow and gently shelving, which makes it comfortable for children, though it is brackish and can look slightly golden-brown or greenish rather than clear blue, particularly after wind or algae blooms in high summer. Water temperature typically reaches the high teens or low twenties Celsius only in July and August. The beach is long and open rather than a cove, so it is exposed to onshore breezes from the north-west, and there is no surf to speak of; the atmosphere is that of a traditional family resort with a lively promenade feel. In season lifeguards patrol the beach, and there are changing cabins, toilets, beach volleyball courts and areas for sunbathing, with cafes and restaurants lining Jomas iela just behind the dunes, so food and drink are never far away. Sun loungers and umbrellas are typically offered by nearby businesses, though availability and prices vary by season. Access is simple: trains on the Jurmala line from Riga Central Station take roughly 30-35 minutes to Majori station, and the walk from the station down Jomas iela to the sea takes about ten minutes past shops, wooden villas and street musicians. Drivers should note that Jurmala applies an entry charge for cars in the main season, and parking near the beach fills quickly on warm weekends. A long boardwalk and cycle path run behind the dunes, linking Majori to neighbouring Dzintari and Bulduri, which makes a pleasant walk or bike ride along the whole resort. Outside swimming season the beach is popular for sunset strolls and winter walks along the frozen shoreline.

  • Walk a few hundred metres east or west of the Jomas iela entrance for a quieter stretch.
  • Bring a light windbreaker; evenings by the Gulf of Riga cool quickly even in July.
  • Check lifeguard flags before swimming, as the sandbars can create uneven depths.
