Panfilov Park, formally the Park of 28 Panfilov Guardsmen, is a large, shaded green space in central Almaty, Kazakhstan, bounded by Gogol, Kunaev, Zenkov and Kazybek Bi streets. It is named for the 28 soldiers of the 316th Rifle Division commanded by General Ivan Panfilov, who are commemorated in the Second World War memorial at its heart. The park is among the most visited public spaces in the city and works as a hub where history, religion, museums and everyday leisure sit side by side.
The centrepiece is the Memorial of Glory, a large monument with a sculptural group of soldiers and an eternal flame, set before a wall inscribed with the names of the fallen. Locals lay flowers here, and newlyweds often pose for photographs on the steps. Beyond the memorial, broad avenues of trees lead to the brightly painted Ascension Cathedral, one of the park's best-known landmarks, as well as the Museum of Folk Musical Instruments and the Military History Museum, both on Zenkov Street.
The park is open to pedestrians daily and costs nothing to enter. Visitors will find benches, fountains, small cafes, ice-cream and kvass vendors, and in the warm months families, chess players and street artists. A short loop to see the memorial, the cathedral and the museums takes about an hour, while a leisurely stroll with a coffee stop can fill two. The best light for photography comes from the morning and early evening, when the cathedral's colours are warm and the paths are less hot.
Crowds are lightest on weekday mornings and heaviest on weekend afternoons and on Victory Day, 9 May, when ceremonies draw large gatherings. Summer shade makes the park a welcome refuge from the heat. It is well connected, with the Zhibek Zholy metro station about a 10-minute walk away and Green Bazaar close by, making it a natural anchor for a day on foot through central Almaty.
