About Almaty
Almaty lies about 700-900 m above sea level at the foot of the Trans-Ili Alatau, a range of the Tian Shan whose peaks exceed 4,000 m. Founded as the Russian fort of Verny in 1854, it was the capital of Soviet Kazakhstan and of independent Kazakhstan until 1997, and it remains the country's financial, cultural and tourism hub. The centre is a green grid of wide avenues, parks and Soviet-era landmarks such as Panfilov Park and the wooden Ascension Cathedral, and the Green Bazaar and the pedestrian Arbat (Zhibek Zholy Street) give a taste of daily life. Within an hour the mountain playground begins: the Medeu valley, the Shymbulak resort, Big Almaty Lake at 2,511 m and the trails of Ile-Alatau National Park. Day trips reach Charyn Canyon, the Kolsai-Kaindy lakes, the Turgen Gorge, Kapchagay Reservoir, Tamgaly petroglyphs and Altyn-Emel. Spring and early autumn are the best seasons; July is hot and January is cold and often smoggy.

Getting around Almaty
Almaty is a spread-out city of about 2.35 million people stretched from the mountain foothills in the south to the airport in the north-east. The centre can be covered on foot, with a one-line metro, buses on a flat tenge fare, and very cheap ride-hailing taxis. Essential travel tips
- Download Yandex Go, inDrive, 2GIS and the Onay app before arrival, and buy a physical Onay card for buses and the metro
- Carry cash in tenge; many small vendors, park offices and minibuses do not take foreign cards
- Citizens of the EU, UK, US and many others enter visa-free for 30 days, and the accommodation must register you within three working days
- Bring your passport to Big Almaty Lake and other border-zone areas where checkpoints operate
- Layer clothing: mountain areas are 10-15 degrees cooler than the city
- Check air quality before outdoor plans in winter, and book Shymbulak lift passes at shymbulak.com
Safety information
Almaty is among the safer big cities in Central Asia for visitors, and violent crime against tourists is rare; the realistic problems are bag and phone snatching in crowded bazaars and on buses, taxi overcharging, aggressive traffic, winter smog and mountain hazards.
Dial 112 for any emergency (free, works from any phone). Direct lines are 101 for fire and rescue, 102 for police, 103 for ambulance and 104 for gas emergencies.
Order taxis in the Yandex Go or inDrive app rather than hailing cars at the airport or hotels; agree the price in the app before the ride and pay by the shown amount.
Carry a photocopy or phone photo of the passport and entry stamp or registration slip; police document checks are possible, and the original passport should stay in the hotel safe unless travelling outside the city or into a border area such as Big Almaty Lake.
Keep wallets and phones in front pockets at the Green Bazaar, Barakholka market and on buses, and use ATMs inside banks or malls.
Do not photograph military sites, government buildings, police or border posts; the area around Big Almaty Lake and the Kolsai-Kaindy region is a border zone with checkpoints where a passport is required.
Almaty is in a seismic zone: if an earthquake strikes, drop, cover and hold on, move away from windows and glass facades, and follow hotel staff instructions; keep shoes and a phone by the bed.
Hike in the Ile-Alatau mountains with a charged phone, the offline map (Maps.me or 2GIS), warm layers and a plan filed with the hotel; weather changes fast and mudflows (sel) can follow summer storms.
Drug laws are strict: possession of cannabis or any illegal drug can bring prison, so refuse offers; alcohol is legal but public drunkenness is penalised.
