Shymbulak is the main ski resort of Almaty, Kazakhstan, set in the Zailiyskiy Alatau range above the Medeu skating rink at the southern edge of the city. The base area sits at roughly 2,260 m, and a gondola from the lower station at Medeu carries skiers and snowboarders up the valley, so the slopes can be reached in under an hour from the city centre.

Lifts serve a network of runs that suit beginners through to confident intermediates, with steeper off-piste terrain above the groomed pistes that is best tackled with a local guide. The activity covers downhill skiing and snowboarding, and lessons with resort instructors are available for first-timers and children.

No special certification is needed, but a basic level of fitness is helpful because the altitude is noticeable for visitors arriving from low ground. Children are welcome and a reduced child day pass applies. Helmets, boots, skis and snowboards can all be rented at the base, so visitors only need to bring clothing. Warm layers, a waterproof jacket and trousers, gloves, goggles and high-factor sunscreen are the standard kit, since the mountain sun and glare are strong even in midwinter.

The resort is operated by Shymbulak Mountain Resort, which publishes tariffs and conditions through shymbulak.com and its app. For the 2025/26 season an adult day pass was listed at roughly KZT 12,000-15,500, a child pass at about KZT 6,000, and equipment rental at KZT 8,000-10,000, with higher prices during the 25 December-11 January holiday peak. The 2026/27 tariff had not been published at the time of writing, so current prices should be checked before travel.

Safety is handled through marked and groomed pistes, a ski patrol and first-aid provision on the mountain, with evacuation by piste vehicle or down the gondola corridor in case of injury. Visitors should respect closures, stay on marked runs, and avoid slopes that are closed for avalanche risk after heavy snowfall, as the Zailiyskiy Alatau does experience avalanche hazard off the prepared terrain. Travel insurance that explicitly covers skiing is advisable.

The season runs roughly from November to April, with the most reliable snow from December to March. Gondola winter hours are about 08:30-18:00. Weekends and the New Year holidays bring long queues at the gondola and lifts, so weekdays offer a calmer experience. Poor visibility during snowstorms and wind closures of upper lifts are the main conditions to avoid.
