Shosenkyo Gorge

Shosenkyo Gorge sits about 13 kilometers north of Kofu Station in the granite highlands above the Kofu Basin, reached by Yamanashi Kotsu bus in 30 to 50 minutes depending on how far along the gorge the bus continues. From April through November the bus runs the full route from Kofu Station to Shosenkyo-guchi (30 min, ¥710/$4.50), then on to Greenline Shosenkyo (40 min, ¥1,000/$6.30) and the Shosenkyo Taki Ue terminus (50 min, ¥1,090/$6.90); from December through March the direct service stops at Shosenkyo-guchi only. The gorge is a roughly 4-kilometer walking route along the Arakawa River, framed by sheer granite cliffs, unusually shaped rock formations with names like Kakuenbo (a 30-meter granite pillar), and the 30-meter Sengataki Waterfall near the upper end. A cable car near Shosenkyo Taki Ue climbs to the Yatsugatake and Southern Alps viewpoint at the top of Mt. Kurataki for those wanting a wider panorama without a full hike. A typical visit starts at the Taki Ue end and walks downstream toward Shosenkyo-guchi, taking in the waterfall, rock formations, and riverside teahouses selling grilled ayu (sweetfish) and local crystal-carving souvenir shops, since Kofu's gem-cutting tradition has deep roots in this gorge's quartz deposits. The walk takes 1.5 to 2.5 hours at an easy pace with minimal elevation change on the main path. Late October into early November brings the gorge's famous autumn foliage, when maple and other deciduous trees color the granite cliffs and crowds build substantially on weekends; arriving on a weekday or early morning avoids the worst of the bus queues at Kofu Station during peak color weeks.
