Chureito Pagoda & Fujiyoshida

Chureito Pagoda stands in Arakurayama Sengen Park above Fujiyoshida City, about 8 kilometers northeast of Kawaguchiko Station and reachable in 15 to 20 minutes by the Mount Fuji World Heritage Loop Bus to the Chureito Iriguchi stop, or by Fujikyu Railway to Shimo-Yoshida Station (10 min, ¥310/$1.95) followed by a 10-minute walk to the park entrance. From either approach, reaching the pagoda itself requires climbing about 400 stone steps through forest, a 15 to 20 minute walk that gains genuine elevation and can be humid in summer. The five-story red pagoda, built in 1963 as a peace memorial, frames one of Japan's most photographed views: the pagoda in the foreground with Mount Fuji rising directly behind it, a composition especially prized in early-to-mid April when cherry blossoms bloom around the pagoda's base and in late October through November when the surrounding maples turn red and gold. Fujiyoshida itself, at the foot of the park, is the traditional gateway town for Mount Fuji's Yoshida Trail pilgrims and retains a historic main approach street, Kanadorii-dori, lined with old inns and shrines leading toward the Fuji Sengen Shrine; the town is also known for Yoshida no udon, a chewy, firm regional noodle served in a miso-soy broth, widely available at small shops near the station. A typical day climbs to the pagoda in the morning for clearer Fuji visibility before afternoon cloud often builds, then descends to explore Fujiyoshida's shrine street and eat Yoshida udon for lunch. Because the pagoda's Fuji view depends entirely on clear weather, checking the morning forecast before departing from Kawaguchiko is worthwhile, and arriving at opening time gives the best chance of both good visibility and thinner crowds on the narrow viewing platform.
