Jokiin Shojin Ryori

Jokiin is a small shukubo temple lodging on Koyasan offering a traditional shojin ryori set that sits at the lower end of the mountain's shukubo price range, making it accessible to travelers seeking an authentic temple-stay meal without the cost of some of Koyasan's larger, more elaborate lodgings. The course follows the standard shojin ryori precepts -- vegetarian dishes free of meat, fish, and allium vegetables -- built around gomadofu sesame tofu, seasonal tempura, and a miso soup studded with wild mountain vegetables gathered locally. Meals are served in the temple's tatami dining hall to overnight guests, with dinner and breakfast timed around the temple's daily rhythm, and guests can typically join the morning prayer service. The atmosphere is quiet and modest, consistent with a smaller shukubo rather than a showcase temple. No alcohol is served. Because meals are bundled with lodging, reservations are made through the Koyasan Shukubo Association rather than booked as a standalone restaurant visit, and advance booking is recommended during Koyasan's busier travel seasons.
