Fukuchiin

Fukuchiin occupies a quiet corner of central Koyasan, Wakayama, a short walk from Kongobuji Temple, the head temple of Shingon Buddhism, and within easy reach of the main Senjuinbashi bus stop. Like many of Koyasan's roughly 50 shukubo temple lodgings, Fukuchiin combines an active place of worship with guest rooms arranged around a traditional temple garden, giving the stay a calmer, more contemplative feel than the larger tourist-oriented temples nearby. Rooms are simple tatami-mat spaces, offered as a standard tatami room or a tatami room overlooking the garden, furnished with futon bedding rather than Western beds. The temple's signature draw is its dining: dinner and breakfast are both fully vegan shojin ryori, prepared without any animal products, including dashi stock, distinguishing it from temples that use fish-based broth. Fukuchiin also operates a private hot spring bath that guests can reserve for exclusive use, a rarer amenity among Koyasan's shukubo. There is no restaurant beyond the set temple meals, no pool, and no fitness facilities, in keeping with the monastic character of the property. Service is quiet and personal rather than resort-style, with staff assisting with meal timing and bath reservations; the temple suits travelers seeking an authentic overnight in Koyasan's temple town, including vegans and vegetarians for whom the fully plant-based kitchen is a specific draw, though it is less suited to guests wanting late-night amenities or Western-style beds.
