Kada & Wakanoura Coastal Trip

Kada and Wakanoura sit about 12 km west of central Wakayama City and are reached in thirty to forty minutes, either by the Nankai Kada Line direct to Kada Station or by Meiko Bus toward Wakanoura Bay, making this the shortest and least demanding of the prefecture's day trips. A morning start suits Kada, a working fishing village and beach where the Nankai Kada Line terminates a short walk from the sand and harbor, with fresh seafood available at small shops near the port. From Kada, a bus or short taxi ride continues to Wakanoura Bay, where the steep vermilion staircase of Kishu Toshogu Shrine climbs a hillside overlooking the water, built in the early Edo period as a mausoleum shrine for the Kishu Tokugawa clan. Adjacent Kimiidera Temple, perched on a cliffside above the bay with views across Wakanoura, is reached by a long stone stairway and makes a natural afternoon stop, with several small restaurants nearby serving lunch. Because the round trip covers only about twenty-five kilometers total, this outing works well as a half-day excursion or can be paired with another nearby sight in central Wakayama City on the same day. March through May brings cherry blossoms around Kimiidera's grounds, while June through August is best for beach time at Kada; the short travel time means there is little benefit to an early departure, and a late-morning start still allows a relaxed pace through both stops.
