Kimiidera Temple

Kimiidera Temple, on a hillside overlooking Wakayama City, is the third temple on the Saigoku pilgrimage circuit of 33 temples dedicated to the bodhisattva Kannon, a route dating back over a thousand years and considered Japan's oldest organized pilgrimage. Founded in 770, the temple's halls climb a terraced hillside connected by a long stone staircase of 231 steps, which pilgrims traditionally climb on foot as an act of devotion, though a paid cable car offers an alternative route to the upper temple complex for those who prefer not to walk the full stairway. At the top, the main hall houses a hidden image of the eleven-faced Kannon, unveiled to the public only once every several decades, while the grounds offer sweeping views over Wakayama City toward the Kii Channel. Cherry trees planted along the hillside terraces bloom in spring, framing the temple halls against the city view below. A visit taking either the stairs or the cable car and exploring the main hall grounds takes about an hour to ninety minutes. Spring cherry blossom season, typically late March into April, is the most visually striking time, drawing crowds of both pilgrims and blossom viewers, while a quieter visit is possible on weekday mornings outside that season.
