Toyama Municipal Folk Museum

The Toyama Municipal Folk Museum occupies the 1954 concrete keep-style building at the center of Toyama Castle Park, built as a postwar civic and museum project rather than a historically accurate reconstruction of the original Edo-period castle. Inside, the museum's collection traces the history of the Toyama domain, the Maeda-clan branch fief established in 1639 after Maeda Toshinaga's earlier, brief occupation of the castle site, through samurai armor and weaponry, domain administrative documents, and models illustrating the castle's Edo-period layout before its stone walls and moats were reduced to their present form. Additional galleries cover the folk life of the wider Toyama region, displaying agricultural tools, household implements, and craft objects tied to the area's rice-farming and river-trade economy, giving the museum a dual identity as both a castle-history museum and a regional folk-life collection. Exhibits are arranged on a chronological path from the castle's Sengoku- and Edo-period origins on lower floors to Meiji-era and later regional folk material on upper floors, with an observation level at the top of the keep providing views over the surrounding park and moat. The museum's building itself, despite not replicating the original keep's exact appearance, has become a recognizable civic symbol of postwar Toyama and has undergone routine facility upgrades without altering its core 1954 structure or exhibit layout.
