Takaoka Municipal Museum

The Takaoka Municipal Museum stands within Takaoka Kojo Park, on the grounds of the former Takaoka Castle, and presents the city's history from Maeda Toshinaga's 1609 founding of Takaoka through its development as a merchant and craft-industry town after the castle's dismantlement in 1615. Core exhibits cover the castle's brief active period, using archaeological finds and maps to reconstruct its moat-and-earthwork layout, before moving into the city's better-known identity as a center of bronze and copper casting, an industry Toshinaga seeded by inviting foundry workers from Osaka's Kawachi region to found the Kanaya-machi ironworks district. Displays include cast bronze and copper objects, ranging from temple bells and Buddhist statuary components to household wares, alongside tools and techniques used in Takaoka doki metalworking, tying the museum's collection directly to the still-active local craft industry. Additional galleries address the Edo-period administration of Takaoka as a merchant town under the Kaga domain, including trade records and artifacts from the city's role in regional commerce. The museum's presentation is organized chronologically, moving from the castle's founding and dismantling to the merchant-and-craft-town era that followed, giving visitors a direct link between the park's surviving moats outside and the exhibits inside.
