Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route (Murodo & Yuki-no-Otani Snow Corridor)

The Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route crosses the Northern Japan Alps between Toyama and Nagano prefectures via a chain of cable cars, a highland bus, a trolleybus, and Japan's only electric trolleybus tunnel beneath Mount Tateyama. Visitors ride through six connecting transport links, culminating at Murodo, the route's highest point at 2,450 meters, where the Yuki-no-Otani Snow Corridor rises in walls up to 20 meters during the spring opening in mid-April. From Murodo, short walking trails lead to Mikurigaike Pond and views over the alpine plateau, while the trolleybus continues to Kurobe Dam and on to Ogizawa in Nagano. A full one-way traverse from Toyama to Ogizawa takes six to eight hours including transfers and stops; many visitors instead do a round trip to Murodo or Kurobeko in four to five hours. The snow corridor walking section, roughly 500 meters of cleared roadway between towering snow walls, draws the largest crowds from late April through Golden Week (April 29–May 5), when queues for the highland bus can extend well over an hour. Early morning departures from Tateyama Station reduce wait times substantially. Photographers favor the snow corridor's midday light for wall depth and the Murodo plateau at sunrise for the Tateyama peaks reflected in Mikurigaike Pond. Autumn foliage across the alpine slopes peaks in late September to early October, when the maples and larches around Bijodaira and Midagahara turn gold and crimson. Because the route operates only from mid-April to the end of November, winter travel is not possible, and even in season, weather at Murodo can shift quickly from clear skies to fog or snow flurries at any time of year given the elevation.
