Takaoka Daibutsu (Great Buddha of Takaoka)

The Takaoka Daibutsu is a 15.85-meter bronze seated Buddha statue in central Takaoka, cast in 1933 after earlier wooden and metal versions were lost to fire, and it is often cited as one of Japan's three great bronze Buddhas alongside those in Nara and Kamakura. The statue reflects Takaoka's centuries-old reputation as a center of bronze and copperware casting, a craft tradition still practiced in workshops around the city. Visitors approach the statue through a small plaza and can enter the hollow base beneath the figure, where a gallery displays photographs and a painting depicting the face of the Buddha before restoration, along with information on the statue's casting history. A full visit, including the base interior, takes 20 to 30 minutes. The statue is illuminated after dark, and evening visits offer a notably different atmosphere from the daytime plaza, with the bronze surface taking on a warm glow against the night sky. Because entry to the plaza and base is free, the site sees a steady flow of visitors throughout the day rather than concentrated crowds, though tour groups often stop briefly here en route to nearby Zuiryuji Temple or Takaoka's old town districts. The statue's face, modeled after actor Ichikawa Danjuro IX according to local tradition, remains a distinguishing detail worth viewing up close from the base level.
