Kansui Park (Toyama Canal Waterfront)

Kansui Park sits along the Fugan Canal near Toyama Station, a waterfront green space built around a repurposed canal once used to transport lumber and goods from the mountains to Toyama Bay. The park's centerpiece is the Tenmon-bashi, an arched pedestrian bridge that becomes the focal point of an evening illumination reflected in the canal waters. Visitors walk the canal-side promenade past the Kansui-en Japanese garden, a small teahouse, and Sogawa Chaya, a restored geisha house now used as a rest and event space. A seasonal sightseeing cruise, the Fugan Unga Kansui Cruise, runs along the canal from spring through autumn, offering a slower-paced view of the waterfront from the water itself. A visit combining a walk through the park and gardens takes about 45 minutes to 90 minutes, longer if joining the boat cruise. Evenings are the park's most popular time, when the Tenmon-bashi bridge and surrounding trees are illuminated and reflected in the canal, drawing local residents and visitors for an after-dinner stroll. The park is a 10-minute walk from JR Toyama Station, making it an easy stop before or after train connections, and it hosts seasonal events, including cherry blossom viewing in spring when trees along the canal bloom.
