Otani Onsen

Otani Onsen is a small public bath in the Otani district of Naruto, Tokushima, close to the kilns that produce Otani-yaki, the region's large-scale unglazed pottery. The bathhouse serves the pottery town's residents and craftspeople and draws visitors touring the nearby kilns who stop in to soak after walking the hillside pottery district. It is a modest, single-story facility with one main indoor bath and a dry sauna, without the multi-pool layout of larger onsen resorts. On select weekday evenings the bathhouse runs herbal bath nights, adding medicinal herbs to the tub water, a practice rooted in older Japanese bathhouse tradition rather than a spa treatment menu; there are no therapists or booked services here. Entry is pay-as-you-go at a front counter, and bathers choose between the men's and women's sides for the duration of opening hours; the facility does not take treatment reservations because it does not offer individual treatments. The building's plain, working-town character reflects its role as a neighborhood bath rather than a tourist spa, and it is often quiet outside the evening hours when local residents come after work. Naruto is best known for its whirlpools and the Otani-yaki kilns, and this onsen functions as a low-key stop for travelers exploring the pottery district on foot. It is closed on Mondays.
