  • Distance8 km round trip
  • Duration4–5 hours round trip
  • Elevation1,930 m Jirogyu summit; ridge stays above 1,850 m
  • TransportSame access as Mount Tsurugi via Minokoshi chairlift

This traverse extends the standard Mount Tsurugi route by continuing along the ridge to Mount Jirogyu, sharing the same trailhead access as the summit trail: the Minokoshi chairlift, reached by bus from JR Awa-Ikeda Station or by private car via Route 438 to the paid parking area.

Mount Tsurugi to Mount Jirogyu Ridge Traverse

This traverse extends the standard Mount Tsurugi route by continuing along the ridge to Mount Jirogyu, sharing the same trailhead access as the summit trail: the Minokoshi chairlift, reached by bus from JR Awa-Ikeda Station or by private car via Route 438 to the paid parking area. From the summit of Mount Tsurugi (1,955 m), the ridge path drops slightly and undulates southwest toward Mount Jirogyu (1,930 m), covering roughly 8 km round trip with 4 to 5 hours of hiking time. The ridge stays above 1,850 m for most of its length, meaning the whole traverse is exposed to wind, sun, and afternoon weather with little shade. Technical difficulty is greater than the standard summit trail: the path narrows in places, crosses rocky sections that require careful footing, and demands sustained fitness rather than technical scrambling. The surface alternates between packed dirt, exposed rock, and short sasa-lined sections. Notable landmarks include the Mount Tsurugi summit boardwalk, the saddle between the two peaks, and open viewpoints over the Iya Valley to the south. The Tsurugisan-Chojo Hutte near the Tsurugi summit is the only shelter along the route; there is no water source once past the chairlift top station, so hikers should carry all water for the traverse. Turning around at the Tsurugi summit shortens the outing to the standard route if weather deteriorates.

Highlights

  • Extended ridge walk connecting Mount Tsurugi and Mount Jirogyu summits
  • Sweeping views over the Iya Valley from the exposed ridge
  • Quieter trail than the main Tsurugi summit route
  • Saddle viewpoint between the two peaks

Tips for visiting

  • Carry trekking poles for the uneven rocky sections along the ridge
  • Hike May through October when the connecting Minokoshi chairlift is running
  • The exposed ridge has no shelter from wind, so turn back at the Tsurugi summit hut if conditions worsen
  • Carry all water needed for the full traverse since none is available past the chairlift station
  • A GPS app or paper map helps at the few unmarked junctions on the ridge

When to visit

May to October is best, ideally starting in the morning to avoid the afternoon cloud and wind that build over the exposed ridge.

Accessibility

The ridge traverse is not wheelchair- or stroller-friendly; the narrow, rocky sections require sure footing and are unsuitable for those with mobility limitations.

Frequently asked questions

Is this traverse harder than the standard Mount Tsurugi summit hike?

Yes, the additional ridge distance to Mount Jirogyu adds exposure and uneven rocky footing beyond the main summit trail.

Can hikers shelter on the ridge if weather turns bad?

The only shelter is the Tsurugisan-Chojo Hutte near the Tsurugi summit; the Jirogyu ridge itself has no huts.

Is water available along the ridge?

No, hikers should fill up at the Minokoshi chairlift top station before continuing to Jirogyu.

What season is best for this traverse?

May through October, while the Minokoshi chairlift operates and the ridge is generally free of snow.
