Oboke Gorge is a stretch of the Yoshino River carved through smooth, folded quartz schist rock, and the sightseeing boats here let you get close to rock formations that took millions of years to expose. It's a calmer, more scenic counterpart to the Iya Valley's mountain drama, with the boat ride itself being the main activity rather than a bonus to a hike. The gorge is narrow enough that the rock walls rise close on both sides for much of the route.

  • Quartz schist rock walls - smooth, layered rock exposed by the river, distinct from typical granite gorges elsewhere in Japan
  • Koboke section - a secondary stretch of rapids and rock just upstream, sometimes visible from the road on the way to the dock
