Ryuzu and Yudaki Falls Long Exposure

Ryuzu Falls, near the outlet of the Yukawa river in Okunikko, splits into twin cascades that tumble over volcanic rock, and photographers frame the falls from the viewing platforms and footbridge alongside the water, using the split flow and surrounding forest as natural leading lines toward the cascade. Overcast mornings are the preferred condition here, since even, diffused light avoids the blown highlights that direct sun creates on the white water during long exposures, and the softer light also keeps color saturated in the surrounding foliage. May and June bring fresh green growth along the banks, while late September into October brings the same autumn color found elsewhere in Nikko, with maples framing the twin cascades. The falls sit along a walking trail connecting to Yudaki Falls and Senjogahara further up the valley, and while the immediate viewing area rarely reaches the congestion of Kegon Falls, weekend crowds during peak foliage can make it difficult to hold a tripod position on the main platform for extended exposures; visiting on a weekday morning offers more room to work. There is no fee to view Ryuzu Falls from the public platforms, tripods are permitted, and spray from the falls reaches the closer viewing points, so a rain cover for camera gear is worth carrying. Drone flights are prohibited within Nikko National Park.
