Kegon Falls Observation Trail

The Kegon Falls Observation Trail is a short, paved walkway to the viewing platforms of one of Japan's most famous waterfalls, located at Chugushi on the eastern shore of Lake Chuzenji in Nikko, Tochigi Prefecture. The trail is reached by a 10-minute walk from the Chuzenjiko Onsen bus terminal, or by Tobu Bus from JR/Tobu Nikko Station (about 50 minutes, ¥1,150). From the upper observation deck at roughly 1,270m, an elevator descends 100m through bedrock, for a ¥570 fee, to a lower platform at approximately 1,170m directly facing the 97m falls. The walking distance itself is minimal, around 300m of paved and railed pathway, and the visit takes 30-45 minutes including elevator time. The surface is entirely paved and stepped, with handrails throughout, though the lower platform sits within the falls' spray zone and can be slippery. There are no technical sections; the main landmarks are the upper deck overlook, the elevator shaft carved through volcanic rock, and the lower deck facing the base of the falls. Shops and restrooms are available at the upper deck complex, and the site is open year-round, with October foliage and winter partial ice formations on the rock face drawing the largest crowds.
